Have you ever heard the claim from an Atheist, “There is no evidence for the existence of God.”, or “I am an atheist because it is irrational to believe in God.” These are two of my favorite claims by atheists and honestly one of the major reasons that I wanted to start this blog. Both of these statements are baseless and false, but they give me great incite into the world that we currently live in. They also tell me that Christian apologetics is more important than ever, especially to our youth. Christian apologetics are reasoned arguments or writings in justification of something, in this case the existence of an all power, all knowing God. In the world as we know it, there are several reasons why apologetics are becoming increasingly important, here are three that I think are the most important.
- The world is becoming smaller and smaller everyday – With the advent of video conferencing, social networks, and email, anyone can connect with anyone else across the world. That means that the message of Christ can be told all over the world. Since there are numerous rational reasons for the existence of God, Christians can use these new technologies to make them known to the world. These technologies also allow Christians to take our time in replying to other individuals so that we always have the ability to communicate with the love of Christ and not in hostile angry tones. This of course must be balanced with good old fashioned face-to-face communication. The face-to-face communication is the only way that we can communicate that we understand where non-Christians are coming from and that we are not judging them. One way or another, we as Christians need to use the resources of our day to spread the message of Christ.
- Information is widely available – This is our chance as Christians to show the world that we are not morons and we can actually look up rational arguments and scientific studies that defend our worldview, and believe there are a lot of these. The Brookings institute performed a study showing that there are three things that are essential to becoming a financial success, at least graduate high school, get a full time job, and wait until you are 21 to get married and have children. Notice how each of these items is reinforced in the Bible (hard work, commitment, and strong family ties). There are also other more controversial studies on sexuality and gender that state that there is little to no evidence that being homosexual has any biological basis among other conclusions. This is clearly a conclusion that is given in the Bible. There is also scientific research that shows that there is a clear beginning to the universe, which expedites an argument for the existence of a creator (God). However, for this to have any relevance at all, we as Christians need to educate ourselves in the latest facts and scientific research that exist. This will not save everyone, but it is our job to do as much as we can to save as many people as we can.
- These things must be put together to better reach out to people outside the church – The first two items on this list are a great start for Christian apologists, however, if these two things aren’t used in conjunction, then we will have trouble effectively reaching out to anyone. In other words, we need to state the facts and show where the facts are leading us but we need to do it with the love of Christ. If we use these two things, people will start thinking of Christians differently, it was what they have been screaming for years now.
It is supremely important in today’s world for Christians to know what they are talking about and why we believe what we believe. There are extremely good reasons to be a Christians and we need to be able to clearly communicate that with the world around us. We have a task that was given to us by Christ himself and it is a lot easier than dying on a cross, and that is spreading his good word. Let us use the our gifts and the resources of our time to grow his kingdom.
